Confirmation classes take place on Sunday mornings at 10:00 a.m. over nine months. Eighth-grade youth have a chance to learn in a particular way about God, the church, and their own vocations. This process culminates in an opportunity to become formal members of the church. The word “confirmation” refers to this process being a confirmation of the promises made by the church to babies at their baptism, and as a confirmation of the young person’s interest in responding to God’s grace with a life of Christian discipleship. The student confirms their faith and connection to the church, and the church confirms their promises to love, teach, and care for this young person.
Each confirmation student, or confirmand, is paired with a Confirmation Mentor, an adult member of our congregation, who walks with them throughout the year-long confirmation journey. Mentors offer spiritual, emotional, and practical support to our confirmands as they discern the roles they wish to assume in the church's life.
BMPC follows a special tradition regarding confirmation. Every confirmand participates in a month-long daily spiritual practice, offering their experience in a presentation two weeks before Confirmation Sunday. Session members of BMPC then view the Confirmation projects and interview each youth about their experience, hearing from them about why they want to be voting members of the congregation.
